Bills “fast-tracked” in response to community calls for action
TRENTON – The New Jersey Kids Code Coalition issued a statement applauding the Assembly Science, Innovation and Technology Committee’s unanimous passage of the New Jersey Kids Code (A4015) and social media warning labels bill (A4013) as well as its overwhelming passage of a bill to create a social media research center (A4014):
“We applaud the Assembly Science, Innovation and Technology Committee for their votes in favor of strong, smart kids online safety bills including the New Jersey Kids Code, and we’re especially grateful to Assemblywoman Andrea Katz for her leadership in bringing forward these bills and Speaker Craig J. Coughlin and Chairman Chris Tully for their support. By backing the Kids Code and social media warning labels, New Jersey legislators are proving that the united voices of youth, parents, and experts outweigh Big Tech’s self-serving narratives. As Big Tech CEOs stand trial because they continue to prioritize profit-seeking over keeping kids safe, our resolve grows even stronger to pass this critical legislation to protect New Jersey’s young people from online exploitation and harm.”
Prior to the bill’s passage, community advocates including young people, parents, educators, and medical professionals shared powerful testimony in support of the bills after lawmakers hosted a media availability to raise public awareness and answer questions about the youth safety proposals.
