The New York Kids Code Coalition brings together parents, youth, medical professionals, partners organizations, and other experts to advocate for legislation to provide safety-by-design and privacy-by-default protections for kids and teens online.
Endorsed Legislation
Warning Labels for Addictive Social Media Platforms Act (S4505/A5346)
This bill would require social media platforms with addictive design features to provide clear and persistent labels about the potential mental health risks from too much social media use, similar to warnings for other addictive products, like alcohol and tobacco. This bill would alert all users to social media’s potential mental health and well-being risks, involve mental health and education experts in rulemaking and research, and empower all New Yorkers to make healthier choices about their social media use.
New York Children’s Online Safety Act (NYCOSA) (S4609/A6549)
This bill would limit how strangers interact with minors on social media and gaming platforms with chat functions. These restrictions would include direct messaging, profile visibility, and financial transactions. This bill would restrict public access to minors’ profiles by default and ban dark patterns that encourage privacy breaches and harmful behavior.
