Warning Labels for Addictive Social Media Platforms Act (S.4505/A.5346)
Passed by the New York State Legislature on June 17, 2025, and signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on December 19, 2025, this law requires social media platforms with addictive design features to provide clear and persistent labels about the potential mental health risks from too much social media use, similar to warnings for other addictive products, like alcohol and tobacco. This law alerts all users to social media’s potential mental health and well-being risks, involve mental health and education experts in rulemaking and research, and empowers all New Yorkers to make healthier choices about their social media use.
Stop Online Predators Act (SOPA) (S.4609/A.6549)
Enacted in the New York state budget in 2026, the Stop Online Predators Act (SOPA) limits how strangers interact with minors on social media and gaming platforms with chat functions. The bill was Introduced by Senator Andrew Gounardes and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic with restrictions on unknown adult interactions with minors including direct messaging, profile visibility, and financial transactions. This law restricts public access to minors’ profiles by default and ban dark patterns that encourage privacy breaches and harmful behavior.
Protecting Kids from Unsafe AI (S.9051/A.10379)
Introduced by Assemblymember Alex Bores and Senator Kristin Gonzalez, the Protecting Kids from Unsafe AI Act would prohibit artificial intelligence companions from using features which are considered unsafe for minors. The bill was passed by the New York State Legislature on June 5, 2026.
