The California Kids Code Coalition brings together parents, youth, medical professionals, partners organizations, and other experts to advocate for legislation to provide safety-by-design and privacy-by-default protections for kids and teens online.
Passed Legislation
Age-Appropriate Design Code (AB-2273)
Co-sponsored by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and Assemblymember Jordan Cunningham, the California Age-Appropriate Design Code passed with nearly unanimous bipartisan support in 2022. The law aims to protect children’s online privacy and safety by requiring digital platforms to design their products with the best interests of children in mind.
Social Media Warning Labels (AB-56)
Sponsored by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, this bill was signed into law in October 2025 to require social media platforms to display warning labels about the profound risk of harmful effects on youth mental health.
Endorsed Legislation
Age-Appropriate Design Code Updates (AB-2246)
Sponsored by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, this legislation updates and strengthens California’s Age-Appropriate Design Code by eliminating enjoined sections, clarifying language found vague by courts, and providing new privacy-by-default and safety-by-design protections for minors online.
