The Vermont Kids Code Coalition brings together parents, youth, medical professionals, partners organizations, and other experts to advocate for legislation to provide safety-by-design and privacy-by-default protections for kids and teens online.
Passed Legislation
Age-Appropriate Design Code (S.69)
Introduced by Senators Wendy Harrison, Seth Bongartz, and Patrick Brennan and championed by Rep. Monique Priestley, the Vermont Age-Appropriate Design Code would improve young people’s digital experiences by requiring tech companies to implement privacy-by-default and safety-by-design protections for kids online. This means not collecting or selling their data, setting high privacy standards by default, and avoiding manipulative design. The legislation was signed into law by Governor Phil Scott on June 12, 2025, and goes into effect on January 1, 2027.
